Astounding Types of Electric Motors The basic, simple industrial motor

Presently, electric motors are used in most of the modern machines such as industrial fans, home appliances, disk drives, vehicles, automobiles and much more mainly to operate the machines efficiently. For example, Electric Motor that is present in fan is used to rotate the fan perfectly according to the user’s instructions. Electric motors are mainly used to convert the Electric Energy into mechanical energy. There are several benefits that are bestowed by the electric motors and they are responsible for the effective performance of a machine. Due to the advanced technologies that are emerging rapidly, we are able to find different types of electric motors that are designed specifically for the machine in which they are used.

Basically, there are two types of electric motors namely AC motors and DC motors. Modern motors are developed based on these two primary motors.

Some important types of electric motors are listed below:

AC motors:

The basic, simple industrial motor is the three phase AC induction motor, which is also known as the squirrel cage motor. The speed of the AC motors depends on fixed number of winding sets, the frequency of AC line voltage and the amount of torque loading on the motors. There are few important benefits offered by this motor such as reliable operation, low cost, simple design and most importantly easily found replacements. Some few disadvantages are found in the AC motors such as inability to operate at low speeds, speed control is expensive and positioning control is not up to the expectations.

DC motors:

It is one of the important motor that is present in most of the machines. It is designed to operate on DC electric power. Some of the advantages of DC motors are easy to control speed, torque and understand design, simple and cheap design. However, there are few disadvantages that are found in this motor such as needs more maintenance, large in size, expensive to produce and unable to control the motor at low speeds.

Brushed DC motors:

It has AC in a wound rotor with a split ring and permanent magnet stator. There are few limitations in this motor such as need for brushes, need more maintenance and many more problems.

Brushless DC motors:

This motor resolves most the limitations that are found in brushed DC motors. They are commonly used where precise speed control is necessary.

Universal motors:

It is designed to operate in both AC and DC power; therefore it is known as universal motors. However, there are few limitations such as maintenance expensive and short life problems.

Induction motors:

It is an asynchronous AC motor. It operations are similar to the transformer in which the power is transferred to the rotor by electromagnetic induction.

These are some of the common types of motors. Besides, there are many more types that vary slightly in their design and functioning. Most importantly, Electric Motor Repair should be done only by professionals because a small fault can completely damage to the motor.

In the 1850s, Baltimore’s 170,000 residents had few options when it came to getting around town. Before the decade’s end, however, the omnibus–an urban version of the stagecoach–emerged as Baltimore’s first mass-transit vehicle. Horsecars followed, then cable cars, and ultimately electrically powered streetcars. Recognizing the need for cohesion, the city’s myriad transit providers merged into a single operator. United Railways and Electric Company, incorporated in 1899, faced the unenviable task of integrating routes being served by inadequate, incompatible, and often obsolete equipment. Over the next seven decades, privately run mass transit in Baltimore survived bankruptcy, a name change, two world wars, the proliferation of private automobiles, a takeover by out-of-town interests, and a plethora of new vehicles. Arguably a unified system of privately operated mass transit was no closer to being a reality in 1970, when it reached the end of the line and was taken over by the state.

The cigarette lighter socket is an electric system used in automobiles for lighting cigarettes and to supply electrical power through a plug or a power adaptor (which may change the voltage; see below). However, they were not originally designed to provide electrical power for miscellaneous devices, and are not an ideal power connector for several reasons: notably the fact that three sizes exist (two for 12-volts DC and one for the older 6-volt DC systems) and the mating of the different sized 12 volt DC plugs and jacks is problematic. This, combined with the often only loosely secured connections (often using only friction and springs to make the connection hold), together with the low-current small-gauge wiring sometimes used, mean that the power connections they provide are sometimes unreliable and not suitable for high-power devices.

Excerpt: Barley Motor Car Co. was a manufacturer of automobiles in Kalamazoo, Michigan and Streator, Illinois. It manufactured the Roamer automobile (1916-29) and, briefly, the Barley (1922-24), and the Pennant (1924-25). In 1913, Albert C. Barley bought the assets of the Streator Motor Car Company, which was put into receivership in 1911. Streator was itself the product of the Erie Motor Carriage Company and had been manufacturing the Halladay automobile since 1905. Barley’s new company was called Barley Manufacturing Co. and he reopened the factory at Streator, Illinois and continued to produce the Halladay for a few years. Barley, Cloyd Y. Kenworthy, a New York auto dealer then selling only electric automobiles, and Karl H. Martin, who later developed the Wasp automobile, decided to build an upscale automobile, and incorporated Barley Motor Car Co. in New York State in September 1916 with a capitalization of $50K. It was established for the purpose of building motor trucks, cars, autos and accessories. Shortly thereafter, the company issued more classes of stock and was recapitalized with an additional $760K, obtaining the existing assets of Barley’s manufacturing company. Manufacturing was soon moved to Kalamazoo, occupying the former Kalamazoo Buggy Co. factory. The initial model introduced in 1916 was called the Roamer. The name was suggested by Kenworthy’s chauffeur after a popular racing horse of the era. The car was very stylish and the grill was nickel plated and modeled after the Rolls-Royce.
